Truth

We share Mississippi's past honestly, centering everyday people and hard truths with respect.

Community

We listen to local voices and build programs that grow from neighborhood needs.

Traditions

We preserve and celebrate the living customs, music, foodways, and storytelling that continue to shape everyday life

A Century of Teaching and Telling

Long before we had a building, we had a promise. Our founders carried more than 100 combined years in classrooms, studios, and archives, listening to young people's questions about who they are and where they come from. We created this museum so Coahoma County's story, spanning prehistoric roots and today's streets, could finally be told in full, with honesty, care, and deep local knowledge.

Rooted In Community Life

Every program we offer begins with a simple belief, our children deserve to see themselves in history. In our galleries, classrooms, and workshops, young docents greet visitors, elders share memories, and families gather for tutoring, folk music, and art. We blend academic support with cultural pride so that youth leave with stronger skills, and they also carry a clearer sense of purpose tied to Coahoma County's future.

Telling the Whole Story

Our mission stretches between ancient earthworks and present-day freedom songs. We honor Native communities, enslaved Africans and their descendants, European settlers, migrant workers, and many others whose lives shaped this Delta soil. We name the hundreds who marched, taught, cooked, printed flyers, and opened homes for civil rights. By lifting these intertwined stories, we invite visitors to see Mississippi as a complex, ongoing multicultural community.
